Tamnalok

‘Tamnalok’ is an artistic exploration of Jeju’s unique folktales in the Jeju regional dialect that are becoming forgotten and disappearing from our lives.* The term Tamnalok is a combination of Tamna, the kingdom that ruled Jeju island in ancient times and lok, a sino-Korean word that means ‘record’; it is also the title of a collection of poetry written in 1764 by Shin Gwangsu

  • Remembering the Jeju Dialect

The artist in this exhibition is Yeni Kim, an illustrator and designer based in Seoul and London, who has created several large-format pop-up books that interpret and visualize the Jeju dialect through workshops. In this artwork, she has tried to record the Jeju dialect in the form of art to help us all remember this disappearing language and pass it onto the next generation. She worked with a Jeju dialect expert and haenyeo (female divers) to collect regional expressions; the work will be shared with children from Hamduk Elementary School in Jeju.

from Jeju to Jeju

This project focuses on how the problem of waste can be addressed in Jeju from an artistic perspective. Jeju is confronting a serious issue of waste, as its population and the number of visitors have increased dramatically in the past few years. Also, it has to dispose of a large volume of ocean waste that arrives from other countries nearby. Using rubbish found on the shore, artist Yangkura and architect Maria Glionna will  create a mobile building which will be used for a performance with them and participants. Afterwards, it will be presented for public display for a limited period.

* the performance schedule may be viewed at the official Sleepers Summit website soon

Hopefully everyone will be inspired by sharing this unique experience.

  • Held on 24 Oct (Saturday)
  • Location: Place Camp Jeju

This video was made for future burners as I was helped so much whlist I was preparing for the Burningman. Thank you, my family, who said “go and enjoy”. Burningman makes one appreciate the love from family – most important yet we take for granted. Thank you Halcyon and Pinkheart family, Aine & Gary and our bus crew, Dan who was mentoring all the prep list, amazing Janet for editing and Crimsen who made this extraordinary music! And of course, countless burners who made my week magical!

See you 2019

‘Sleepers in Venice exhibition’ was held by Stephanie Kim and eight young Korean artists, and British advisory artist MarkWallinger, during the 2015 Venice Biennale season. The exhibition starts with Stephanie Kim’s idea making a connection between what she feels when she visits Venice Biennale as a curator, and human beings who are helpless against being confronted with desire and intellect. She also linked her ideas with those of the master of German literature, Thomas Mann, presented in his jointly authored novel ‘Death in Venice’. The actual arena of the artists’ dream, Venice Biennale, seems attractive on the face of it, but artists have reported feeling nauseous and impatient in the face of desire and intellect. In the process, the curator was inspired by Mark Wallinger’s own video work ‘Sleeper’. He wanted to express the anguish of artists who were bound to gigantic institutional arts called ‘art museums’. Stephanie Kim thought that this work had connections with her planning for the Sleepers in Venice project and contacted him directly; this led to him participating in the exhibition as an invitation artist and advisor. The word ‘Sleeper’, which is the main subject of the exhibition, is another way of saying that the ‘spy’ is ‘lying down’ or ‘sleeping’ before a period of activity. In this context, all artists and people in cultural industries with potential to grow both inside and outside of Korea, are called ‘Sleepers’. The Sleepers in Venice exhibition was successful. It attracted the attention of the media from many countries and over 5000 people visited the exhibition.

The curator also wanted to produce a film of the exhibition with Sleepers Summit team, and its form and content, which could be presented and viewed without the time and space constraints of a real-life exhibition. Accordingly, the preparation and process of the exhibition was shot and edited by film producer, Steve M. Choe.
